About Us

The Chatham Islands Fire Brigade is Eastern Fire Regions most remote Fire Station, lying approximately 800 kilometres east of mainland New Zealand. The Brigade has a crew compliment of 18; this includes 2 women firefighters.

The Brigade has one International Fire Appliance and two small Tohatsu portables and has recently received a brand new Mitsubishi Ultralight. The Brigade is stand alone with the exception of the Department of Conservation Fire Crew and Kaingaroa Rural Fire Party and, if needed, the Kaingaroa party is approximately 1 hour away. The call out system is much different. When the brigade is needed a certain phone number is called activating the alarm automatically, the caller leaves a message on an answer machine. We also have call trace capabilities via toll circuits to New Zealand.

The Chatham's consists of two main islands. The population of the larger is 700 the smaller 50. The main sources of income are fishing and farming, most other businesses revolve around these. Chatham was the first place in the world to see the sunrise of the new Millennium.
