Located in the Auckland City Central Fire District, Auckland Region, City Station is one of the 3 largest in New Zealand, and is the largest of the 28 permanently staffed stations in Auckland Region. The present City Station was built in 1944 and is an exceptional building architecturally, as it was designed and built in the era of art deco. The station has 5 appliances with a total of 56 personnel. Each watch comprises a Senior Station Officer, 3 Station Officers and 9 fire fighters.

City Station attends approximately 3500 calls per year and is a station of specialist appliances. It has a Scania Spec.3 pump/rescue tender, a Mac Baker model 5070 23 mtr. aerial scope (the only appliance of this type in New Zealand) fitted with a Darley 90 l/s 3 stage pump, a hazardous materials unit, a breathing apparatus tender and the newly designed and commissioned command unit with exceptional communication facilities.

The city itself is a large accommodation, retail, banking and commercial area, with high rise buildings to 40 floors and the Sky Tower at 320 meters (the largest tower of its type in the Southern region hemisphere). Such risks as these, as well as the Sky City Casino, university, hospital (largest in New Zealand), port (welcoming up to 70 cruise ships per year), and various entertainment complexes make Auckland region a diverse and modern city, where tourism is fast becoming the area's largest industry.

The City station also covers a large residential area encircling the city, and a small industrial area to the south. The total response area is approximately six square kilometres. The Fire Region Commander, District Chief, Fire Safety Department and Administration Support Staff are located within the City station complex.
