About Us
Ponsonby is one of 6 stations in the Auckland City Central Fire District. The road of the same name on which it sits, is an Auckland region icon with a variety of cafes, bars, restaurants and exclusive shopping.

The station was rebuilt in 1980 on the same site as the previous station. The Ponsonby area is one of the oldest suburbs in New Zealand and this is demonstrated by the two previous fire stations, one of which dates back to the 1890s, both of which have been converted to popular restaurants.

Ponsonby borders Auckland region City, Balmoral, Avondale and the beautiful Auckland region Harbour and encompasses an area of approximately twelve square kilometres. A variety of risks include the Oil Tank Farm (Freemans Bay), the Americas Cup Village and port venue, a high number of rest homes and boarding houses (400), and a great deal of older close proximity housing, where in some areas homes are over 110 years old.

Ponsonby can be 1st response to the city and has a large 2nd response area including the North Shore. In the area three motorways and the Harbour Bridge facilitate high volume commuter traffic from the north, south and west and the station averages over 2500 calls per year.

Ponsonby station has two appliances. A Scania type 3 appliance with a two stage Darley pump crewed by an officer and 3 firefighters and a foam tender (in the process of being up-graded) which is cross-manned by the pump crew. The foam tender responds to the high-risk areas such as Freemans Bay (Tank Farms), Whenuapai Air Force Base to the west, and the Auckland region International Airport to the south.
