Oakura is a small township situated 12km south of New Plymouth. It has a population of approximately 2000, which increases significantly during summer with campers etc increasing numbers by a further 1500. A Four Square Store, tavern, and a service station are the major buildings in the township, supported by a number of smaller businesses. Okato is a further 14km south, with most surrounding area being farming. The majority of residents of Oakura commute to New Plymouth for employment.
