The major hazards in Ohakune are commercial accommodation such as ski lodges and hotels, Mount Ruapehu erupting, large transient crowds and main truck railway line. Other risks we have identified are carrot growing facilities, overcrowding in public facilities, single water support, three primary schools, tow Kohanga Reo's, one kindergarten and one college.
The brigade is supported by Raetihi Brigade, which is about 11kms away.
Ohakune is a small town situated 11kms east of Raetihi. The town building profile is predominately residential with a small CBD with mostly light industrial to service the rural community and tourist industry. It has a population of about 1,500 people, but over the winter months this can increase to 10,000 - 15,000.
We are currently undertaking a pilot employer recognition programme. This brigade is participating in the pilot and as part of the pilot we are listing employers of volunteers within a brigade on the NZFS brigade web page.
This Brigade is proudly supported by the employers below. The NZFS acknowledges the support provided by these employers but does not seek to endorse any product or service provided and therefore the listing of these employers is in no way an endorsement by the New Zealand Fire Service.
