Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1957. The Brigade covers the areas between the Waimakariri River north of Darfield settlement to the Rakaia River south of Darfield. Darfield Volunteer Brigade has established their own Fire Museum. Situated 25 minutes west of Christchurch on State Highway 73 Darfield is the main town between Christchurch and the West Coast and is close to Ski fields, forests, lakes and the beautiful Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers.
Darfield's current population is around 2,000, but it has enough land zoned for almost 8,000 residents.
Darfield is approximately 48kms south of Christchurch in the heart of the Canterbury Plains and is part of the Selwyn District. The Southern region Alps are to the west of the township forming a spectacular backdrop to the region. The Tranzalpine Express Train stops off at Darfield on it's way to Greymouth on the West Coast. Primarily Darfiled is a service township for the local rural community. Although mostly an arable farming district, more diversity is coming into the local area.
