Milson Fire Station originated on the 2nd March 1996 being co-located with the Crash Rescue Services at Palmerston North Airport. Today the station is located in Tremaine Ave and was built in July 1997. The station houses one fire appliance and 15 staff who work a three watch 56 hour shift system and respond to about 500 to 600 calls a year. Milson also responds to Feilding for day cover and is second pump to Ashhurst and Bunnythorpe. The main risks in these areas include the Railway Yards, Palmerston North Hospital, Palmerston North International Airport, a number of distribution companies, rest homes and schools.
The fire appliance is a 1998 Series 4 Scania with a 55l/s single stage Darley pump. There is a high pressure booster pump fitted for the Hose Reels.
Other than training and responding to emergencies, the Milson firefighters work with the local community to provide fire safety and prevention education, this includes fire safety presentations, leaflet drops, the Fire Wise Programme in schools and the fitting of smoke alarms. The monitoring of trial evacuations is also a large part of the firefighters work load.
