Fire Prevention

Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations are designed to give building owners and occupants a plan of what to do in the event of a fire.

Evacuation Schemes
The building owner is responsible for submitting an evacuation scheme to the Fire Service for approval. Regulations require occupants to hold a trial evacuation. Your evacuation scheme must specify what to do if you discover a fire, what to do if you are alerted to a fire, where the place or places of safety are and how to get to them.

Fire Fighting and Smoke Detection
It is advised that some form of fire detection and suppression system should be provided in all commercial premises. It is strongly recommended that first aid firefignting equipment (fire extinguishers and hose reels) is provided in all commercial premises. Where this is the case, building occupants should be trained in how to operate them correctly. It is advised that all fire detection and suppression equipment is well maintained and identified clearly with appropriate signage

Stock Storage
Ensure all stock is clear of escape routes
Ensure that the stock is kept well away from any heat source.
Do not stack stock or rubbish so high that is impedes the effective operation of equipment such as sprinklers or fire detection systems.
Locate rubbish bins away from buildings (e.g. rear of car park).
Provide clearly labeled containers for waste and hazardous substances examples could be flammable liquids, paint rags and oily rags.
Ensure all electrical appliances, leads and power sources are fit for purpose and regularly tested
