Guide to outdoor Fireworks display
Overview
Under the Hazardous Substances (Classes 1 to 5 Controls) Regulations 2001 S.39 the New Zealand Fire Service is required to, upon request to provide written agreement in order for the display of Class 1 - Category G substances.
Written agreement is required from the Fire Service for outdoor public displays using Class 1 category G pyrotechnics. The download section has a form with information that the Fire Service will need in order to approve an indoor display. If you have an application outside of a fire district by reference to Section 23, Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 an outdoor fire work display application must be forwarded to a Rural Fire Authority for the attention of the Principle Rural Fire Officer (PFRO) for approval. Contact your local territorial council who will be able to advise of the relevant Rural Fire Authority where your display is to occur.
Timeframes and requirements
There is no statutory time limit to process an application however the Fire Service requires 5 days before the date of firing to process an application. By prior arrangement and at the discretion of Fire Service this may be reduced to 3 working days before the date of firing. If an application form is incorrectly filled out or has insufficient information or inappropriate controls to make a decision, the applicant will be advised in writing of those errors or omissions.

- Your answers should reflect the complexity and size of the display AND have been reached in conjunction with appropriate parties, such as the event organiser building or land owner.
