We have set up 0800 NZFS INFO - A team dedicated to risk reduction in Christchurch. Supporting recovery to community and businesses.
Many families are now living in homes that do not provide ideal fire safety. The Fire Service is providing free long-life smoke alarms to many Christchurch residents and has a variety of advice and information available. Details on how to make your home fire safe and on the help we can provide can be found here.
The recent earthquakes toppled thousands of chimneys in Christchurch and Canterbury and damaged many more. Before using your fires, log burners, or installed gas heaters this winter we urge you to have the chimneys, flues and gas heaters pipes professionally checked and serviced.
Also check that your smoke alarms are still properly attached and working - they could save your life. If you have to move as a result of the earthquake - don't forget to take your smoke alarms with you.
Practise your family's escape plan. What will you do and where will you meet up if there is a fire or other emergency at your home?
If you have any questions about how to improve your home fire safety, please contact your local Fire Service on 0800 NZFS INFO.
Some homes have suffered damage but not to the degrees where people have had to move out.
If you are living in a damaged home and are concerned about the safety of the electrical wiring please contact the master electricians at www.ecanz.org.nz for a free inspection.
