Hutt City's three new fire stations are ready to be moved into on January 15.
The stations, on Bridge Street in Alicetown, High Street in Avalon and Parkside Road in Seaview were blessed in late December by Maori Anglican arch-deacon Wally Campbell at the completion of a $5.5 million project to modernise fire cover in Hutt City.
On January 15 the morning crews from waterloo will start their shift at either Avalon or Hutt City (Alicetown) stations, while Petone and Point Howard crews will base themselves at the new Seaview station.
Arapawa Fire Region Commander Bill Butzbach says while it is a massive undertaking to shift crews into three new stations at once, he is confident it will go smoothly.
'We've been planning for this move for a very long time, and all the possible snags have been looked at and, where possible, eliminated.'
'A group of people worked tirelessly making over 1,000,000 changes to the data that governs which fire crews are sent to which locations through the 111 system, and that has tested and re-tested. However, the transition period will be closely monitored to ensure any problems are quickly fixed'
Mr Butzbach says the new stations were designed with input from local firefighters and will stand the test of time.
'Where we've located these station and what we've put in them in terms of trucks and equipment will mean the Lower Hutt area has the best available fire cover for the next 30 years at least. We anticipate a faster response time to a greater area as a result.'
