ECO BULBS RAISE NEW SAFETY CONCERNS

The Fire Service is looking into whether eco bulbs are a safety hazard after reports some have melted at the base

There are fresh safety questions over energy efficient light bulbs.

There are reports of instances where the bulbs have melted at the base and blackened the surrounding electrical installation.

Peter Wilding from the Fire Service says some eco bulbs may have been in the place where house fires have started. He says the Fire Service is trying to identify whether there is a design fault with the actual bulbs or whether the way they are installed is a factor.

Mr Wilding suspects the problem may be incorrect installation, with people twisting the bulbs while installing them, resulting in cracks at the base.
