Auckland's emergency services have been frantic this evening, attending a massive blaze at a Mitre 10 building in Onehunga, as well as an apartment fire in the central city.
Firefighters from all over Auckland were called to the Mitre 10 blaze.
Sixteen appliances were fighting the fire and police have closed roads, including a major motorway. A power transformer has been damaged, which may affect power supply in the area.
Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips told NZPA the fire at the Princess Street building was reported at 5.05pm.
Police said the fire was spreading and have closed the South Western motorway from Hillsborough Road to Coronation Road.
They have warned people heading to the airport to either take an alternative route or face lengthy delays.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Edwards of northern police communications said police had also set up road blocks at several intersections.
Mr Edwards said it was expected that emergency services would be at the site for some time and traffic diversions may be in place for hours.
