Extensive damage to Satara kiwifruit coolstore facility in Katikati, Bay of Plenty; investigations underway this morning
Bay of Plenty firefighters have worked through the night to dampen down
hotspots, after a massive blaze at a coolstore in Katikati.
Emergency services were called to the Satara coolstore and packhouse on Wedgewood St just after five o'clock last night.
Firefighters had to remove iron walls around the building to gain
access to the fire's core. The blaze was confined to the coolstore area
but officers say the damage is extensive. Millions of kiwifruit have
been destroyed and a fireman broke his leg after falling off a ladder.
Tauranga Fire Chief Ron Devlin says was a long night for firefighters.
An assessment of the full extent of the damage will take place today and Fire Safety officers will be at the site.
