The top part of Timaru's Stafford St was closed yesterday as firefighters were called to a blaze at Ginger and Garlic restaurant.
Crowds gathered on the footpath opposite the restaurant as fire crews worked to extinguish the small fire, which began in a deep fryer about 4.30pm.
Five fire appliances from Timaru, Washdyke and Temuka were called to the address.
Senior station officer Lex Ferguson said firefighters forced entry through the front and rear doors to get to the fire.
Fire crews were at the scene for an hour because of the amount of smoke in the building after the fire was extinguished.
Fire safety officer Kevin Collins said it was fortunate that there was no structural damage to the building and only minor damage to the restaurant.
