Yesterday's fire at Bramwell Booth House in Temuka is being treated as suspicious.
Two fire appliances from Temuka, one each from Timaru and Washdyke, and a tanker from Clandeboye were called to the address about 12.40pm yesterday.
Fire safety officer Kevin Collins said the fire service has finished its investigation into the fire. Its findings have been passed on to police.
Temuka senior station officer Murray Blogg said the home's sprinkler alarm was activated by a small fire on the second floor, and people in the home were evacuated safely. No-one is thought to have been upstairs at the time the alarm went off.
Several fire appliances were called to the address due to the premises' large size, Mr Blogg said.
