Electricity

Before your power is restored

  • ensure all home appliances and power outlets are turned off

  • ensure all electric cords and appliances are unplugged from the wall socket

  • inspect electrical appliances for any visual damage and if damage is found, do not use

  • do not attempt to make temporary repairs to damaged or faulty electrical equipment

When your power is restored

  • if you receive any tingles when touching electrical appliances or water taps, or if you hear unusual buzzing or flickering of lights when your power comes back on, turn the main switch off immediately. Seek assistance from a qualified tradesperson

  • if circuit breakers trip or fuses blow, this is a warning that something is wrong, keep is switched off and seek qualified advice

  • always treat exposed wires with care. Remember that turning off the main switch does not mean that the wires feeding power to your house will be safe

Remember

  • take extra care wherever water is present

  • keep children well away from electrical equipment

Gas

  • Your gas pipes may have been damaged by the earthquake
    .
  • if you smell gas and suspect pipes may be damaged, turn off gas immediately at the meter or cylinder. You'll need to get them tested by a licensed gasfitter before use

  • inspect gas appliances and cookers for any signs of damage or an unusual flame. If you suspect damage, do not use. Turn off at the cylinder and get it checked by a licensed gasfitter.

  • if the appliance has a flexible hose connection, ensure you do a soapy water test prior to operating it to ensure you do not have a leak. Do this by applying dishwashing liquid to the end of the hose. If it starts foaming it means you have a leak. Get it checked by a professional before using it and ensure the gas supply and appliance are turned off.

  • if you smell gas anywhere outside your house, contact emergency services and/or your local gas supplier

Remember

  • cooking appliances should NEVER be used for heating purposes indoors or in confined spaces as carbon monoxide build-up. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal

  • ensure all gas appliances (for example, cookers and hobs) and cylinders that supply them, are turned off when not in use.

  • do not attempt to make any temporary repairs to damaged or faulty gas supplies or equipment. Turn off the gas and contact your gas supplier

  • For further information, refer to Energy Safety website: www.energysafety.govt.nz

Other fire safety information to consider:

  • do not use barbecues or outdoor heating appliances inside the home or in enclosed areas as carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal

  • ensure you have working photoelectric smoke alarms fitted in your home

  • ensure you have an escape plan and practise it regularly with your family

  • never leave cooking unattended – not even for a minute

  • keep all clothing, furniture and bedding at least one metre away from any heat source

  • avoid using candles – torches are much safer. If you have to use a candle, make sure it's in a candle holder, or sits on a stable, flat surface. It must be out of reach of children and away from anything that may catch fire.
