Initial application
This is the first stage of the Recruitment process you will undertake to join our crew. This form should be used instead of sending a CV and you should complete it carefully as a decision on short listing will be made on the basis of the information you provide. Candidates who are successfully short listed will be required to undertake the Cognitive Tests.
- It is preferable that you email your application to us. If you are unable to do so, you may complete an application by downloading a copy (www.fire.org.nz/recruit) or request a copy by phoning 0800 347 373, then posting it in.
- If you complete an application by hand, you will need to ensure your handwriting is clear and easy to understand. Those reviewing your application need to clearly understand what you have written.
- HOWEVER you decide to make your application, remember to make a copy of your application, for your own reference. If you successfully reach the interview stage, you are likely to be asked questions about your application.
- Ensure you allow sufficient time to complete the application form. You can expect to spend at least one hour answering the questions.
- Many applications do not make it past the initial short listing process because applicants have simply not provided us with sufficient information to make an informed decision on their suitability to become a firefighter. Don't let this happen to you. A good quality application is usually submitted by a good quality applicant.
How many people send in application forms, and how many are accepted?
Selection for a position as a trainee firefighter is competitive. The Fire Service demands a high standard from successful applicants and due to the large number of applications there is a strict selection process.
At the written application stage we receive approximately 600 applications and shortlist approximately 400 applications to proceed to the cognitive test stage.
